We turned to Mary Campbell at Blas when we were discussing strategic options for our business. We found ourselves engaging with a clear and challenging thinker who zeros in on inconsistencies with laser precision. It is a huge reassurance to discuss a subject with her as she mentally searches around in pursuit of solutions and answers, examining all responses in a logical and practical manner. While her skills as a corporate financier are well known, it is in broader discussions of the business environment that she provides the valuable insights that help a Founder or Owner understand whether it is the right time to invest, to divest or to reconsider their strategy. I can think of no one I would turn to before I would turn to Mary for help in thinking through any significant change of strategy.

As the Founder of Space Aye I was introduced to Mary Campbell and her team almost a decade ago and we are still working with them. The team has a depth of knowledge and experience which extends well beyond the international corporate financier domain. They make their business to understand the latest trends and the possible implications of those trends for boards of large or small firms, across all sectors. They translate complex issues into relatable scenarios, using their extensive experience and knowledge to great effect. They bring the best out of clients, whilst educating and coaching them with the softest of touches, in the knowledge that with their help the clients will stay on course. I would recommend this team to any director looking to be guided through the world of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Critical thinking, an in-depth knowledge of corporate governance and business models and decades of mergers and acquisitions experience, helps prepare clients for the inevitable bumps in the road that they will encounter.

Over many years I have worked with Mary Campbell and the talented team members she led, on many UK based corporate sales and similar transactions where her skilful strategizing and attention to detail have been instrumental in successful outcomes. She draws on years of experience as she focuses on understanding the detail of clients’ businesses and needs.

I met Mary back in 2010 when I joined the team at Blas at the very beginning of my career. From day one Mary has not only been a great leader to work for, she also guided me through my further career changes and moves. She helps me grow both professionally and personally, always sharing her unique insights and perspective. I have always admired how Mary is a highly skilled finance professional and still radiates core values, empathy, kindness and generosity in business dealings and supports colleagues to do likewise. Mary is a strong example for me, a mentor and a friend. She inspires, empowers and nurtures. I always feel that Mary only a phone call away, and this has never changed over the past 12 years, regardless of which continent either of us has lived over the time.

Diverse thinking at its best! I was initially quite sceptical about how Resilient Corporates could influence how boards think differently about risk – but I was wrong!

Resilient Corporates approach to unlocking the potential to think differently about risk and identify what can be done, is both imaginative and hugely productive. I have had the privilege of supporting the team in developing the ‘Juggling Giants’ case study, using a fictional company to test the rational on how boards and companies view change in their sector – using both financial risk and psychological safety of teams as key focus areas. The unique selling point for Resilient Corporates is their extensive pool of talent, pulling from different industries, and cultures offering diverse thinking at its best. I was welcomed with open arms, bringing my aviation safety and risk governance to the team.

Resilient Corporates are great fun to work with, they understand the pressures we all face, and use the feedback from conversations with boards and senior execs to hone their support to focus on what really matters. This experience has given me the confidence and springboard to work with senior executive and board members to unlock potential to think differently. I would highly recommend their services.

The vision of creating a “single source of truth” is simple and elegant; yet illusive and overdue. The sheer cost to our time as individuals, employees and employers, academia alike is long overdue transformation. The Skills Sporran gives us a chance to do just that, one place, one source of truth.

I was fortunate to meet Mary Campbell of Resilient Corporates through the Institute of Directors a few years ago, and immediately recognised her as someone pragmatic, with a wealth of experience that she was willing to share to help companies to thrive. We were delighted when she agreed to work with us on a programme of training, and an accompanying workbook, to support our UK Partners in developing their skills and understanding of corporate governance and finance. This was delivered remotely in small groups during the course of 2022, and everyone commented how useful the content was, and how complicated concepts were explained in a straightforward manner to allow us all to get a clear understanding of them in a theoretical and practical context. Mary’s good humoured and insightful anecdotes made the training periods fly by, and it is really helping our partnership now as the partners have this greater knowledge to rely on. It has been an excellent collaboration and we will look forward to finding other opportunities to work together in the future.

I had the pleasure of working with Mary Campbell during the Sustainable Narratives conference, where she participated in a panel discussion on 'Re-thinking Capital' alongside Professor Mark Blyth. As National Coordinator for Vichaar Manthan UK, I was impressed by Mary's deep knowledge of the subject matter and her ability to engage the audience with her insightful contributions. I have found Mary to be a brilliant original thinker with strong, deep foundations in multiple aspects of business. It was a pleasure to work with her during the conference and I highly recommend her to anyone seeking a knowledgeable and engaging speaker on issues related to sustainability, economics, and business growth.

My background is in asset management and corporate finance and for the past 15 years have been a chair and non-executive director of a wide range of public and private companies. I first met Mary when we worked together at British Linen Bank and since then I have engaged her corporate finance services in other businesses.

Mary is one of the best informed and most skillful financial advisers that I have had the pleasure to work with and she is absolutely tenacious on behalf of her clients. Her wide range of clients gives her a real breadth of experience and an ability to look at a business in a holistic way and understand its challenges and opportunities. Business owners will find her advice invaluable.

I was introduced to Mary Campbell when I chaired an energy conference in New York connecting green energy clients with suitable investors. This complex, global, highly regulated, politically sensitive sector relies on skillful advisers. Mary Campbell demonstrated exceptional skills and knowledge of the energy sector. She is well versed in all aspects of structuring and arranging financial deals for international clients.

Mary Campbell provided us with the ability to tap into the experience and knowledge gained in Scotland to help the US accelerate its understanding in renewables and leverage green energy companies into the US market.

Linda McCutcheon. A publishing trailblazer during the birth of the internet.

September 2023. You will be missed.

Linda McCutcheon

Valued colleague

Linda McCutcheon, our dearly valued colleague, died suddenly at her home in Brooklyn, in September 2023. She is survived by her beloved three children and two grandsons. Linda was a unique, wonder of a human – a true original. Her enthusiasm, creative insights, and friendship will be sorely missed. Linda led the production of this website; her talented commitment to colleagues and clients are evident on every page. In her native New York, Linda is known as “the mother of the internet” and she was regularly asked to speak as an internet “OG”. Clients and colleagues particularly benefitted from Linda’s uniquely valuable perspective on the business opportunities in emerging technologies such as AI and Space to Consumer propositions.

Linda was born and raised in Berwick, Pennsylvania, moved to New York when she graduated, but she continued to serve her alma mater, Boston University, where she was Executive in Residence, attending her final board meeting the week before her untimely death. Linda had a trailblazing career in publishing in New York during the birth of the internet. She rose to become President of Time, Inc’s New Media Division, having previously been strategic lead at The Economist, Business Week, and Ms magazines. Subsequently she headed publications for AARP and at Nielson in media strategy. She often joked that we could thank her for the (usually annoying) internet ads that monetized online publishing.

Linda and Mary met in 2013, at a dinner held in her honour at the Rockefeller Centre, the week she set up in Manhattan. Last words to Linda, “I was drawn to working in the teams that Mary pulls together because I recognise her as a brilliant original thinker with strong, deep foundations in multiple aspects of business. Within the Tech sector, where the pace of velocity is tremendous, a Resilient Corporates team quickly separate out the essential from the irrelevant, leaving their clients a step ahead of their competitors. I have had the privilege of working with the Resilient Corporates team on several transactions and each time I have come away impressed with their insight and breadth and depth of business knowledge. In teams they lead, they ensure that discussions are moved along in the most productive direction. The colleagues are responsive, creative, and some of the best listeners I’ve ever worked with”.
